Get Social Media Savvy with @CyFairJoel: Do more with your 140

Last fall, Twitter rolled out a big update in which images, videos, GIFs, polls and quoted tweets no longer counted toward your 140 characters. On March 30, the social media giant unleashed a new feature that will allow you to do even more with those precious 140.

Now, when you reply to a tweet, the @username(s) of the individual(s) you are replying to will not be included in your characters.

This is great! Not only can you say more in your intended reply message, but now as a Twitter user you don’t need to worry about burdening your followers with a longer @username that takes up valuable space in tweets.

The replies take on a new cosmetic look in the latest Twitter update. The people you are replying to now appear above the tweet text instead of within the tweet text itself. This does assist with seeing the essence of a tweet reply instead of a bevy of @usernames clogging up your screen.

One thing to keep in mind when you’re replying to a tweet with multiple @usernames – sometimes I prefer to only reply to the one person who originated the tweet rather than everyone else. To do this, rather than backspacing through those names in the tweet itself, you could click on the highlighted text of who it says you are replying to above your tweet reply. Now, you can uncheck whomever you don’t want to reply to the right of their @username(s), then close the dialogue box. Now your tweet reply window should pop up with only the tweet originator in view.

For more information, check out the summary on Twitter’s blog. I hope you enjoy this new feature that allows you to do more with Twitter.

P.S. ~~ Don’t forget to share why you love where you work tomorrow during #LoveMySchoolDay by using that hashtag in your tweets/posts.
