Get Social Media Savvy with @CyFairJoel: What’s the story with stories?

We discussed in a previous post how Instagram stories can “Twitter-ize” your Instagram feed by allowing you to keep frequently-posted content in a designated area without cluttering up your standard feed.

As you may know, this was borne from Snapchat stories, which instantly became a fan favorite for those using the ghost app with cray-cray filters and voice manipulations.

Not wanting to be outdone, Facebook launched its stories feature on March 28 to compete with Snapchat.

Similar to Snap, your stories disappear 24 hours after they are posted, and you can decorate the posts with text, drawings, stickers and Snapchat-like animated filters.

To use the Facebook story feature, currently only available on mobile platforms and personal pages, tap the camera in the top left-hand corner (same as Instagram) or tap the plus symbol next to the “Your Story” circle at the top of your news feed. You can then play around with the new in-app camera, adding the special features while taking either a photo or video.

I have not seen any information indicating whether Facebook has plans to integrate stories into business/education pages, which is how I have recommended our schools set up their Facebook pages. My guess is that, with the inevitable success of stories (as has been the case for other Facebook initiatives such as Messenger and Live), they will become more accessible for other formats. Ideally, this would allow you to share a nice stream of positive images and videos taken throughout the course of a school day or special after-school event.

In the meantime, experiment with stories on your personal account. For further information, reference the FAQ section on Facebook’s website.

Until next time,

~ @CyFairJoel
