Bang ES hosts UH football players

UH football player visited Bang ES during College and Career Week to read to student and encourage their future goals.
During College and Career Week, Bang ES hosted members of the University of Houston’s football team to talk to students about their college and career goals as well as the obstacles they have had to overcome as college football players.

One of our goals this year at Bang was to pump up our College and Career celebration days and to have our students thinking about their own goals and plans for their future endeavors,” said Amanda Tran, Bang ES counselor. “We wanted to really kick-off our first College and Career Day for 2016-2017 with a ‘Bang’!”

With the help of Edward Jones II, director of high school relations, player development and letterman relations for UH football, Bang ES organized a schedule of various rotations for the players to visit with fourth- and fifth-grade students for Q & A sessions, wrapping of the visit with players reading to students in first grade and pre-K.

According to Tran, fourth- and fifth-grade teachers also played a key role by helping students generate and create questions about how they can reach college and career goals.

“It was an amazing experience for all of our students to see these larger-than-life college football players, up close and personal, and to get an opportunity to interview the players about their college football journey, the obstacles they had to overcome, the importance of education, staying dedicated and having perseverance,” Tran said. “The players were so gracious, patient and answered all of the eager questions from our students.”

UH football players included No. 52 freshman offensive lineman Braylon Jones, No. 28 freshman running back Joshua Burrell, and No. 70 senior offensive lineman Mac Long. Also represented were Jones and Grace Muscarello, UH’s assistant director of recruiting.

“A huge thank you to my Bang ES staff for organizing such a powerful event for our students and to the UH staff for making it happen,” said Erwann Wilson, Bang ES principal. “The UH football players definitely scored a touchdown with our students.”
