Get Social Media Savvy with @CyFairJoel: Instagram Stories

In 2016 Instagram rolled out a new way to share photos and videos with followers: Instagram Stories. According to Instagram:

"With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want."

Snapchat introduced the story feature back in 2013 as a way to share a series of photos and videos with friends and followers. Like Snapchat's story feature, you can use Instagram Stories to share a series of photos and videos, kind of like a slide show, with your followers to give some real-time content along with the feed of photos and videos attached to your profile.

How do Instagram Stories work?
When one of your followers posts a story for you to see, you will see a colorful ring around their profile photo at the top of your home feed. You won't see stories pop up profile grids or your feed because Stories disappear after 24 hours of posting.

To view someone's story, tap on their profile photo. You can easily toggle through someone's story by tapping on the right or left of your screen. Swiping right will skip over an entire story and direct you to the next person's story in your feed. You can't like or make a public comment on someone's story, but you can send them a direct comment by tapping the three little dots on the bottom right of your screen.

Sharing your own story
To share your own story, tap the camera icon on the top left of your screen. Simply press the capture button to take a photo, or hold it down to record a video up to 60 seconds. Add a filter, type, draw or add some of Instagram's stickers to make your story the way you want it. You can share your story with individual followers, or with all of your followers.

Your story settings follow the same settings as your profile settings. So, if someone can see the photos and videos in your regular feed, they can also see your story.
