Club Rewind ROCKS Soccer Showcase

Nearly 50 students and more than 170 parents turned out for the inaugural skill showcase and tournament for the Club Rewind ROCKS soccer program on May 2 at the Dean MS football field.

The Club Rewind ROCKS soccer program held its inaugural skill showcase and tournament on May 2 at the Dean MS football field. The Bane ES students enrolled in the program played a tournament-style soccer match, complete with trophies and medals for all students, in the three-hour event.

Approximately 47 students showed up to show off their skills, and 176 parents arrived to cheer on their students. With four coaches and two referees, the tournament was a great success. After all games were played and trophies and medals were handed out, a hamburger picnic was provided for all the players and their families.

Congresswoman Brenda Stardig showed up to support those in her district.

Club Rewind ROCKS is a 13-week program funded through a matching funds grant provided by the Harris County Department of Education and awarded by the Houston City Council. Students met twice a week to learn soccer skills, as well as leadership and home safety skills. In additional to the skills learned, each child was provided with a pair of new athletic shoes. Each student also received a shirt for the tournament, fully sponsored by Donte Mathis of Elevation Skills Sports.

“Over the past three months, this is what they have been working toward, the ‘show and tell’ moment of the program,” said Ashley Adams, program director. “Walking in they were excited, during the tournament they were motivated, and leaving, win or lose, they were proud.

“Here, they created friendships, developed leadership skills and learned what it was like to be a part of something greater than themselves,” Adams continued. “Here, they were proud. And we were proud of them.”
