Duryea ES teacher writes books to inspire, encourage children

Nicolle Granderson

Duryea Elementary School fourth grade teacher Nicolle Granderson channeled her experiences as an educator into writing a children’s book, Picture Day- A Story About Embracing True Beauty.

An interactive read-aloud that focuses on main character Amani, Picture Day tells the story of Amani’s excitement for her school's upcoming and highly anticipated picture day.

“I've taught hundreds of students in elementary education for 15 years,” Granderson said. “During that time, a countless number of students have approached me with their physical insecurities and lack of self-love and self-esteem. They don't realize at their young age that beauty comes from within, and our differences make us beautiful.”

Picture Day was released on Amazon in September. Soon after, Granderson published the I’m Beautiful Journal for Young Girls (released Feb. 1), a publication full of powerful affirmations to help boost self-love and self-esteem and guide young girls to see their true beauty.

She is planning yet another book, Untangled Lines, for March 2023. The interactive read-aloud centers around main character Corey, who feels that he doesn't measure up to the fisherman and athlete that his dad wants him to be. On their last fishing trip of the summer, Corey and his dad attempt to untangle the lines of communication and find common ground.

“The objective for each of my publications is to entertain and inspire emotionally, socially, and educationally,” Granderson said.
