In Memory of Velura Anne Johnson
June 17, 1947 - May 8, 2023
Velura Anne Merriam Johnson, 75, lost her battle with cancer and passed away peacefully in Sherman, Texas, on May 8. She was a beautiful soul who inspired family members, students, teachers, librarians and friends.
Anne was born on June 17, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa. After several moves, her family settled in Houston. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1965 and went on to study at the University of Houston, earning her B.A. in English in 1969. During her career, she earned an M.A. in Art History from Houston Baptist University (1985), and an MLS in Library Science from Sam Houston State University (1999).
In 1968 Anne married her college sweetheart, McKie Johnson. They had a son, William Travis Johnson, in 1976.
Anne began her teaching career in 1969 at Cy-Fair HS. She taught English at Jersey Village HS from its opening in 1972, eventually serving as both team leader and department chair for many years. She also served as the librarian at Langham Creek HS before retiring in 2012.
Anne devoted her 43 years in education in service to young people as a teacher and a librarian.
A celebration of life service for Velura Anne Johnson will be held on Saturday, June 17 at 11 a.m. at Spring Branch Presbyterian Church, located at 1215 Campbell Rd in Houston. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
