'Me in '23' gives Labay students 5-year outlook

Labay MS eighth-grade students participated in a project called "Me in '23" that allows them to forecast their future success five years down the road. Cypress Falls HS let their feeder campus borrow caps, gowns and diploma covers to take photos of the students as future graduates.

The photos were displayed throughout Labay's main hallway, and the students completed the sentence "After graduation, I plan to..." beneath their images.

"The students are so proud and it looks amazing!" said Lanette Bellamy, Labay MS principal.

ESL classes enhance community at Cy Falls HS

As a Cypress Falls HS graduate and former student at Truitt MS and Hairgrove ES, Cypress Falls HS AP Roberto Lopez recognized a need in the community to increase parental involvement with the Spanish-speaking population.

I thought, ‘Why not offer parents something that will give them a reason to come to our school(s)?’” Lopez said. “I felt compelled to give back to the community and recognized this as that opportunity.”

Lopez arranged a partnership between Cypress Falls and the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) to offer ESL classes that are free of charge and only require attendance.

The seeds for the program were planted in the summer of 2014, when Lopez met the HCDE coordinator at a training.

I shared the vision of working on increasing parent involvement at Cy Falls,” he said. “We exchanged business cards and a few weeks later an HCDE representative was at our school. In the fall of 2014, we started with an informational meeting for all those parents interested in becoming involved in the program.”

With the support of his campus administrators and assistance of campus secretaries, hundreds of letters were sent home to inform parents of the upcoming classes.

Cypress Falls held a student orientation and registration in the spring of 2015. The unprecedented turnout resulted in eight to 10 classrooms filled to capacity with adults who either wanted to learn English or obtain their GED.

In addition, HCDE has granted the staff at Cy Falls to incorporate topics related to successful communication between schools, students and parents,” Lopez said. “Last year during the classes, we presented two topics both in English and in Spanish. The parents were very appreciative.”

Classes for the current semester have already been filled, and Lopez said the age of participants ranges from teenagers to early 70s. Approximately 20 students signed up for the GED classes, with 80 registrants for the ESL classes.

Many of the students have children that attend Cy Falls High School,” Lopez said. “A waiting list is already in place for next semester. Maybe this is one way to narrow the achievement gap?

Documentary screening at Cypress Falls HS

Cypress Falls HS will host a public screening of Coaches Wives, a documentary movie set to be released later this year, on Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. at the school (9811 Huffmeister Road). Cypress Falls will be the host site for the only screening in the state of Texas.

The screening will be held in the Cypress Falls auditorium and is open to everyone. The campus is asking for a $1 donation per person, which will go to the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Scholarship Fund.

“Our auditorium holds 900 people and we expect to have a standing-room-only crowd!” said Renee Mullen, Cypress Falls athletics secretary.

A trailer for the movie can be found at the Coaches Wives website at http://www.coacheswivesdoc.com/.

“By hosting a pre-screening it gives the wives, coaches, parents and community a chance to see this together as a CFISD community before the official release date later this year,” Mullen said.

Cypress Falls student creates 'Every Student, Every Day' logo

Associate Superintendent Roy Garcia honors Yasmin Chanthavong at the CFISD Annual Leadership Conference for her design of the "Every Student, Every Day" logo.

Cypress Falls HS senior Yasmin Chanthavong's design was chosen to represent the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD 2015-2016 school year theme of "Every Student, Every Day."

Chanthavong, a student in Kim Ross's art class, designed the logo, which uniquely displays the theme in many of the languages spoken by CFISD's 114,000 students.

She was recognized for the artwork by Roy Garcia, associate superintendent of school administration and leadership, during the CFISD Annual Leadership Conference on Aug. 4 at the Berry Center.

Chanthavong's design will be used throughout the entire school year to brand the district theme on t-shirts, websites, social media, presentations and documents.
